How to tell if a card is a gold card
- Gold border and full gold foil. The whole card, including the border, is gold and textured. This is the modern gold design.
- Collector number above the set count. A number like 250/191 means the card is a secret rare. Gold cards almost always fall in this range.
- A gold star after the name. Only EX-era Gold Star cards have this. Look for the star symbol right after the Pokémon name.
- Rarity symbol at the bottom. Scarlet & Violet gold hyper rares carry three gold stars. Older gold secret rares use a single black or white star.

Gold hyper rares (Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution)
Modern gold cards sit at the very end of the set list, numbered past the official count. Most are trainers, energy or ex Pokémon with a textured gold foil over the whole card.
Gold secret rares (Black & White to Sword & Shield)
From Black & White through Sword & Shield, secret rares were mostly gold items, gold energy and gold Pokémon. Rainbow cards from the same years are tracked separately, so this list leans gold, though a few non-gold secrets slip in.

What is the difference between a Gold Star card and a gold secret rare Pokémon card?
Gold Star cards are vintage cards marked with a gold star beside the Pokémon’s name, mostly released during the EX era. The artwork itself is not always gold. Gold secret rares are later cards with gold-colored artwork, borders, or backgrounds and set numbers above the printed set total. They come from different eras and have very different rarity, demand, and grading populations.
How can I identify a real Pokémon Gold Star card?
Look for a small gold star immediately after the Pokémon’s name, an EX era set symbol, and a card number matching an official checklist. Genuine Gold Stars use normal Pokémon card stock, not metal or thick plastic. Compare the fonts, holo pattern, texture, back colors, and copyright line with authenticated examples. Many counterfeits have flat foil, blurry text, or incorrect colors.
Which Pokémon sets contain Gold Star cards?
English Gold Stars appeared in EX era products from EX Team Rocket Returns through EX Power Keepers, plus POP Series 5. Notable sets include EX Deoxys, EX Team Rocket Returns, EX Unseen Forces, EX Delta Species, EX Dragon Frontiers, and EX Power Keepers. Check the exact set symbol because the same Pokémon may also have unrelated cards from that era.
Which modern Pokémon sets have gold secret rare cards?
Many Sword and Shield sets contain gold secret rares, including gold Pokémon, Energy cards, Stadiums, and Item cards. Crown Zenith is especially recognizable for gold cards featuring Arceus VSTAR, Dialga VSTAR, Palkia VSTAR, and Giratina VSTAR. Scarlet and Violet era sets use the Hyper Rare classification for their highest gold rarity, identified by three gold rarity stars.
Why does a gold Pokémon card have a number higher than the set total?
A card numbered above the advertised set size is a secret rare. For example, a card might be numbered 205/198, meaning it is outside the set’s standard 198-card checklist. Many modern gold cards use secret numbering, but numbering alone does not prove a card is gold or valuable. Confirm the set, rarity symbol, finish, and exact card number.
Are gold Pokémon cards actually made of metal?
Most collectible gold cards pulled from booster packs are printed on standard card stock with gold foil or textured surfaces. A few official products include metal cards, such as special commemorative box promos, but these are separate from Gold Stars and ordinary gold secret rares. Solid gold-colored plastic cards and heavy metal cards sold individually are often unofficial novelty items unless tied to a documented Pokémon product.
How rare is it to pull a gold Pokémon card from a booster pack?
Pull rates depend heavily on the set and cannot be applied across every era. Modern gold Hyper Rares and secret rares generally appear much less often than ordinary rare cards, while vintage Gold Stars were exceptionally difficult pulls from products that are now scarce. Use pull-rate reports only as estimates because sample sizes, regional printing, batching, and product type can affect reported results.
