What PSA 10 vs PSA 9 actually means
PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is reserved for cards with strong centering, sharp corners, clean edges, and a virtually flawless surface under close inspection. PSA 9 (Mint) is still an excellent grade, but typically allows a minor flaw — a slightly off center, a tiny white speck, or a faint surface issue — that keeps it out of gem territory.
For collectors and sellers, the practical question is not the label. It is whether recent buyers paid a meaningful premium for the 10 on that specific card.
When the PSA 10 premium is large
- Vintage holos from Base, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Neo — true gem copies are scarce.
- Low pop chase cards where the PSA census shows few 10s relative to demand.
- Iconic characters (Charizard, Umbreon, Moonbreon, Pikachu promos) with deep collector demand.
- Japanese exclusives / trophies where English liquidity is thin but premium buyers chase perfect copies.
On these cards, a PSA 10 can be several times a PSA 9. Always confirm with eBay sold comps on the card page, not a generic multiplier.
When the gap is small
- Modern cards printed in huge numbers that grade into 10 at high rates.
- Soft demand after a hype cycle cools.
- Cards where raw Near Mint already trades close to PSA 9 after fees.
If PSA 10 and PSA 9 sold comps are within ~20–30%, grading mainly for a 10 is a weaker bet unless your copy looks truly exceptional.

- Find recent PSA 9 and PSA 10 sold medians.
- Subtract grading + shipping + time risk from both graded outcomes.
- Only submit if the realistic outcome (not the best-case 10) still beats selling raw.

Is it worth grading if I might only get a PSA 9?
Model both outcomes. If a PSA 9 still clears grading + shipping + risk by a healthy margin, grading can make sense. If only a 10 is profitable, be conservative about surface and centering first.
