Fossil has 124 cards with prices tracked hourly, released in October 1999. A complete raw set is worth about $4,574 and the most valuable card is Gengar #5 at $185.54.

Released in October 1999, Fossil belongs to the original Base era and was the second English expansion after Jungle. Its artwork and roster lean into prehistoric Pokémon, excavation themes, and ancient creatures, while also introducing fan favorites such as Gengar, Dragonite, and the three Legendary Birds to the early English game. The defining chase tier is the holographic rare lineup. Gengar and Dragonite generally lead interest, with Articuno, Moltres, and Haunter close behind. Most holographic Pokémon also have nonholographic rare counterparts, giving set builders two visually similar but clearly numbered versions to pursue.

Set builders can assemble the commons, uncommons, and nonholographic rares through singles fairly easily, but clean holographics create the real challenge. Sealed packs carry strong vintage appeal, though pack provenance and tampering concerns matter. Silvering along holographic borders, scratching, print lines, whitening, and off-center cuts can separate ordinary copies from high-grade examples. First Edition and unlimited printings also require separate decisions for completion goals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most valuable card in Fossil?

Gengar #5 leads the set at about $185.54 raw, followed by Dragonite #4 at $162.10.

How many cards are in Fossil?

Fossil has 124 cards in our price guide, released in October 1999. The most common rarity is Common (32 cards).

How much is a complete Fossil set worth?

Adding up the lowest near mint Cardmarket price of every card gives about $4,574 for a raw set. Buying singles one by one usually costs more once shipping is added.

How many Fossil cards are worth more than $10?

35 of the 124 cards are currently worth $10 or more raw. Most of the rest are commons and uncommons that sell in bulk.

How do I find the card number on a Fossil card?

The number is printed in the bottom corner next to the set symbol and the set code FO. Match it to the list above, or scan the card with a phone app to read it for you.

Why does Fossil have holographic and nonholographic versions of the same Pokémon?

Fossil repeated most holographic Pokémon as nonholographic rares, using different collector numbers for each version. The artwork is generally the same, but the finish and numbering differ. Both versions belong in a traditional numbered set, while some specialized collections also separate First Edition and unlimited printings.

Which Fossil printing differences matter most to collectors?

First Edition cards carry the familiar edition stamp and generally receive more attention than unlimited copies in comparable condition. Unlimited cards lack that stamp. Fossil also has recognized print variations, including incomplete or missing holographic treatments on certain cards, but authentication and condition are especially important with unusual examples.

Do Fossil booster packs have reliable heavy and light weight categories?

Pack weight can suggest whether a Fossil pack contains a holographic rare, but it is not a universal guarantee. Wrapper type, production variation, scale calibration, and the weight of other cards can affect the result. Provenance matters because vintage packs may also have been searched, resealed, or removed from mixed boxes.
